Excavated archaeological sites

The two sites currently being excavated as part of the POPARU project, Uruguai 1 and Linha Policial 7, are located at the entrance to the loop formed by the Uruguay River in the Foz do Chapecó region. They are located on either side of the imposing river, slightly downstream of the hydroelectric dam whose construction made their discovery possible. The dam was built over rapids and small waterfalls that cut across the riverbed. This remarkable landscape configuration could be a key factor in understanding the repeated settlements of different human populations at this location over the millennia.

Linha Policial 7

The Linha Policial 7 site is located on a platform on the right bank of the river, in the municipality of Águas de Chapecó (State of Santa Catarina), opposite Uruguai 1.

A trenching operation followed by an in-depth excavation revealed the site's archaeological sequence, comprising 6 levels dating from 10,500 to 500 years BP.

In all three sectors, excavations focused on the upper levels of the sequence, associated with the Tupiguarani archaeological tradition. These occupation levels yielded structures and artefacts from the daily life of this vast village, as well as burials.
